Well..we have mice. A few months ago we started noticing what we thought were mice or chipmunks in our kitchen. Sure enough,it was a nice little family of house mice. Now,while usually not harmful to people or pet's health, common house mice can still cause a lot of problems. They can chew wires, which can lead to fires or electrical shorts. They leave droppings on the floor and anywhere else they go,which is gross and a pain to have to clean. You also dont want to have company over with the risk of mice running out in their view. Not something that will make people want to visit again. Not only that, but they breed at fast rates. One male mouse can breed with 10-15 females. And you know what that means. A LOT of babies. And the babies get to breeding stage quite fast, which means multiple generations in a short time period.
So we were looking for a fast,no kill solution. Most mousetraps contain toxic blocks(only toxic to the mice, not humans or pets) or snaps, that kill the mice immediately. And well..Im just not one to kill an animal unless theres no other options. Ive been known to catch and release pretty much anything. Spiders, ants, roaches, and yes, even snakes. If I know they dont pose a direct threat to me,then theres no reason to kill in my opinion. Plus, these mice are just the cutest. They have big brown eyes and ears that perk up. And they hop when they run. I would keep them as pets if I could, but thats obviously not an option.
So I went to Lowes and found something called a single-catch live trap. Its from a company called Tomcat. It was only four bucks!
Now heres what you do. You place the mouse attractant gel,or peanut butter or cheese works fine,in the back of the trap. A mouse will become attracted to the smell and walk right in to the trap. When they get to the back of the trap, they will touch a spot that causes the little front door to close. You'll hear it snap,so you'll know theres one in there. You take it outside and pull up the door, and let the little creatures run free! Sometimes it takes a few minutes for the mice to come out, especially the babies. They're understandably scared, and dont understand whats going on. So be patient. They'll be thankful that you're releasing them instead of killing them! We have caught 10 mice in a three day period! Including the male, which is an extremely good thing. Now I can only hope that they all find their family outside and can live happily ever after somewhere else. Wishful thinking huh?!
If you go the Tomcat's website, you will notice they have other types of traps as well. Including those for big bad nasty rodents that carry diseases and can bite and injure people and pets. Yuck. I hope I never have to deal with those! Check out their most popular product, the baits and stations!
